For what it’s worth…

I’ve been teaching photography for a while now….but today, I learnt something new myself. We had a lomo class. In Lomography, you teach kids to throw the rules out of the window. Be fast, don’t think. Just shoot based on your gut feel. And WOW, what a class it was.

For three hours today, the kids were told to have fun. Some basic ideas of how to use the colour splash was given to them. The idea of long exposure was explained and they ended up with a lot of wacky light pictures. No long lectures on one third rule. I didn’t even have to tell them to play with shadows. They did it themselves! At the end of the day, when kids are having fun, creativity comes naturally. It’s a lesson that I learnt myself today too. Stop overthinking everything!

Plus, I’m know that after this class when they go home and they dig out that little digital camera, they will probably find different ways to make their pictures look interesting…Yes, it’s been a good day today. :)
